A slap of paint and good as new
UCAN – UPPERMILL COMMUNITY ACTION NETWORK – SUPP0RTED BY CANAL AND RIVER TRUST
During September we were very pleased to receive assistance from a team of volunteers from the Finance Department of Oldham Council who spent a day clearing vegetation and tidying up around the Wool Road canal car park. They enjoyed the day immensely and we plan to arrange a joint Project Day with them next year.
Two of our recent Project Days were surprisingly blessed with fine weather after we had to abandon the previous one owing to heavy rain. We were finally able to do some painting to spruce up Wade Lock and its surroundings as a welcome break from balsam-bashing. As well as treating the lock gates and paddle gear the faded brown stained fencing was brightened up with white preservative to the rails and black to the posts. There is still more work to do, weather permitting, but we feel that the results have improved the vista of the approach to our village.
Whilst the painters were working, the lady members of our group were equally busy with litter-picking and clearing vegetation along the towpath resulting in a much tidier pathway.
During the winter we plan to continue with vegetation and leaf clearance and also make a start on our pond project in the Viaduct Woodland.
We are always pleased to welcome new members and for anyone interested in getting involved our upcoming programme is as follows :-
October – Thursday 31st
November – Saturday 16th – Thursday 28th
December – Saturday 14th
Getting involved in volunteering in the local environment is a great way of meeting other locals, enjoying some fresh air and healthy exercise, with a well-earned hot drink and biscuit at the end. All equipment is provided by CRT and you are recommended to wear stout footwear and suitable clothing for the weather conditions on the day. The usual meeting point is 10AM at the canal bridge on Moorgate Street; please contact Peter Killan on 07717 508163 or email peterkillan@hotmail.com
