Parking Time Limits For Uppermill

Uppermill. If you want to park here, soon there'll be a limit on how long you can stay.

Time limits are going to be introduced at car parks near the centre of Uppermill, in an attempt to boost the amount of trade for shops. Local politicians are worried about the impact the planned new Tesco down the road at Greenfield will have on Uppermill High Street.

The plans were revealed in minutes of a meeting of Saddleworth Parish Council’s sub-committee on transport matters, held earlier this month. It’s understood that while parking will remain free in Uppermill, time restrictions will be imposed on busy car parks such as the one next to the museum, in the hope that more shoppers will be able to visit the village centre each day. More details will be confirmed next month.

Other items discussed at the meeting included the problem of drivers being directed down inappropriate side roads by satnav. At least one major satnav system suggests traffic heading from Delph to Dobcross should go via Ladcastle Road and Den Lane instead of the main road. The meeting was told that Oldham Council had written to satnav companies asking them to make sure such mistakes were removed from their databases.

Concerns about traffic at the Millgate end of Delph were also raised. It was suggested that, to make the junction less of a dangerous bottleneck, double yellow lines should be put in on the car park side of the road. Meanwhile, at Delph Bridge, the meeting heard that an extra sign could be put up near the White Lion pub so motorists are better aware of who has priority on the bridge. Those ideas will be put to Oldham Council’s Highways Department.

Another problem noted at the meeting concerned buses. At present the 184 and 350 buses, which are run by different companies, leave Uppermill once an hour at about the same time during the evenings. The Clerk of the Parish Council has been asked to speak to regional transport officials in an attempt to get the departure times of one of the buses changed.

on the bus issue the 350 struggles getting round the turning just after Greenfield stn and car drivers coming flying round not giving the bus a chance a warning sign should be put on the apporach

also I swim at Saddleworth pool and on the fences of the football piches next to the road it says no packing and yet people ingorne these signs all the time some even park on the grass next to the centres entrance there are 4 car parks can be used as drivers who park in the right place next to baths have trouble getting out sometimes
