28 tractors in the first ever Saddleworth Tractor Run

Saddleworth Tractor Group organised a charity tractor day and road run for Monday 28th May, all in support of The Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital. The glorious weather ensured it was a fantastic day thoroughly enjoyed by all participants and onlookers.

28 tractors drove around Saddleworth, starting and ending at the Church Inn, Uppermill, before leaving the classic and modern machines on display in the carpark for the afternoon. Lunches of pie and peas were provided by the pub for the tractor drivers, and raffles took place during the afternoon with all proceeds going to The Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital. The convoy included David Brown classics alongside more present-day John Deer tractors, and one tractor even pulled a trailer full of people through the village streets. Despite a couple of hitches with breakdowns and narrow streets, event organisers did a marvellous job. Outriders also took part to prevent disruption and keep the tractors all together. They drove and ex-army Land Rover that has recently been in Iraq and a US Willys Jeep.

One of the organisers and participants, Nigel Shaw, said: ‘This was the first ever tractor run organised by the Saddleworth Tractor Group and we really didn’t know how many tractors would turn up. Roger Bereton organises Military Vehicle events and used this skill to organise this event. The outriders helped to keep the vehicles moving and disruption to other road users and the public. All in all, from feedback received, the event was a roaring success and we hope that we will have raised a good amount for the Children’s Hospital.’

Blessed with sunshine and excellent temperatures the day was filled with smiles of those young and old. Hats, t-shirts and car stickers were also on sale throughout the day for participants and supporters to purchase, again, with all proceeds going to charity.

It was a great family day out all in aid of an amazing cause. Let’s hope it’s even bigger and better next year and becomes a part of our annual calendar! What a great Saddleworth way to spend a bank holiday.

Hopefully a lot of money was raised – well done everyone!
