Update On The Old Woolpack In Dobcross

The old Woolpack yesterday. The lights are on, but the door remains shut.

Workmen have been carrying out repairs to the old Woolpack pub in Dobcross, as the company which owns it begins the task of searching for a new landlord. The pub has been empty for almost two months.

The most recent landlord rang last orders after the August Bank Holiday weekend, after just eight months behind the bar. He had controversially renamed the pub The Shambles, but sadly couldn’t make a success of the business.

The pub was previously known for two centuries as The Woolpack, although it’s not clear if the pub will revert to that name if and when it opens again.

A spokeswoman for the company which owns the pub, Enterprise Inns, said the people seen going in and out of the building in recent days have been carrying out “remedial work” to the premises. She added: “It is our intention to let the pub again.”

Meanwhile, another Enterprise pub, the Farrars Arms in Grasscroft, is due to reopen under new management this Sunday. It’s been shut for much of this year. There’s an interview with the couple who have taken the pub on in this month’s Saddleworth Independent, which can be picked up for free at various locations in our area.

You can read articles from Saddleworth News about the closure of The Shambles here and here, as well as a piece about its name change here.

‘Shambles’, eh? Very apt, I must say.

Villages need pubs, and pubs need regulars. I reckon the previous incumbent got things off on the wrong foot with the new name. Everybody still refers to it as The Woolpack, as much as a road navigation feature as anything else.

The woolpack was further up the hill in whats now a white building just behind the exsisting one on maps of 1890-1914
