A spate of distraction thefts in Oldham

Police investigating a spate of distraction thefts in Oldham are appealing to the public for information.

More than twelve distraction thefts have been recorded across the borough by police since September 2017.

A number of reports have been made to police that a man who spoke in broken English approached members of the public with a map to ask for directions.

At the point that he is asking for directions its been reported that personal belongings and valuables have been stolen.

Detectives have been carrying out extensive enquiries to catch the man responsible including reviewing CCTV and patrolling busy areas.

Detective Constable Kate Dawson, from GMP’s Oldham borough, said: “I want to assure the community that we are doing everything we can to find the man responsible for these offences.

“In many of these incidents, elderly people are sadly the victim of these crimes which we understand is very distressing and we won’t tolerate the trusting nature of innocent people being abused in this way.

“I would urge the public to remain vigilant and report anything suspicious to police.

“If you have any information that could help our investigation and catch the coward that is carrying out these disgraceful crimes then please get in touch with us.”

Anyone with any information about these incidents is urged to call police on 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
