SADDLEWORTH RANGERS Under 16s welcomed one of their main rivals from previous seasons, Rylands Sharks to Churchill Playing Fields in a ‘must win’ game to keep their title hopes alive, so no pressure then!

Rangers started the game well, building some good pressure. An excellent passing movement out to the left wing resulted in Lewis Galbraith crossing. Rangers continued to work through their sets playing good controlled rugby, Chris Bolton made a great break on the right wing, drew the full back in and passed to the supporting Danny Richardson for Danny to score under the posts, converted by Ben White.

Ryan Maneely was next on the scoresheet after a clever reverse pass from Ben White split the Rylands defence, again converted by Ben White to make the half time score 16-0.

The second half started with a Rylands knock-on from the kick off, again some great ball handling to put Scott Booth in on the right wing. Rylands, although without some key players, came back at Rangers with some great aggressive rugby, keeping Rangers penned in their own half for long periods.

Once again the penalty count started to rise and it was on the back of string of penalties that Rylands scored their first try under the posts. More Rangers errors and penalties and another Rylands try from an exellent break made the score 20-12. Ryalnds actually crossed the line again, only for the winger to ‘bounce’ the ball down, how different things might have been.

Shortly following this, Chris Bolton collected the ball from a Rylands knock-on and sprinted down the wing, handing off would-be tacklers to score near the posts, converted by Ben White to make the final score 26-12.

The game started so promisingly for Rangers with the ball getting out to the wings, it’s a shame that we couldn’t keep this ‘shape’ going, particularly in the second half, but a win’s a win, especially against quality opposition like Rylands. Awards this week went to Ryan Maneely for Best Defence, Coaches award to Ross Hansford and Man of the Match to Danny Richardson.
