Canals Open Again Following Linthwaite Fire

Both the Huddersfield Narrow and Huddersfield Broad canals have now re-opened following Monday’s fire at the Grosvenor Chemicals plant at Linthwaite. Officials from British Waterways are satisfied that pollution from the incident, which had got into the River Colne, has now dispersed.

The Huddersfield Narrow was closed between lock 12 at Milsbridge and lock 24 at Slaithwaite early on Monday as emergency services brought the fire under control. The factory itself is situated near lock 20. The Huddersfield Broad was later shut in its entirety after British Waterways decided to close the feed from the Colne into the canal.

There’s more information from the Pennine Waterways website here.

Meanwhile, the boss of Grosvenor Chemicals has apologised to local residents. You can read more about that at the Examiner’s website here.
