Crompton Moor Bike Trail Opens

Crompton Moor

A new mountain bike trail on Crompton Moor is being officially opened today. Oldham’s own international mountain bike rider Tom Braithwaite will do the honours, along with representatives from the council and the moor users’ group.

The money for the project has come from the Big Lottery Fund, which awarded Oldham Council £30,000 to spend on Crompton Moor back in 2007. The council initially proposed replacing the existing, but unofficial and homemade, mountain bike trails with proper ones.

However, council officials say they changed their minds following local public meetings, and so this more family-friendly facility has been built instead. The new trail is graded as being for families and beginners.

There has been controversy over the development of the moor, with some regular users unhappy with elements of the council’s plans and how it has approached the issue. Earlier this year, council leader Cllr Howard Sykes told Saddleworth News he wanted a “sensible” approach to the moor’s future, and said he felt there was room for everyone to enjoy their chosen activities in the area, whether it be walking, cycling or horseriding.

You can read more about the new trail in a press release from the council here. The official opening takes place near the Brushes Clough car park at 1pm if you want to go along.

That area was perfect for some decent red / black trails which would have been used way more than a green route. There is no logic in putting a green trail there instead of a red or black. It would have been brilliant to have a challenging trail in this area. This green trail will not get used.

i really am disapointed in the council are not going to build a PROPER place for me and mates and other proper mountain bikers to enjoy, instead the council have desided to build somewhere for kids to play and familys to go… thats ok but why not build a red or black route, like i said before i am really disapointed in the council for not making crompton moor into a good trail center. this really has got rid of any sursport (which was already low) into not haveing any sursport at all, i really would like to have a red or black route in the area but like always the council have failed to deleiver 🙁 from a not happy gee 🙁

Hey guys I can understand your frustration at there being no higher end trails currently available in Oldham. I have been working on the campaign to get more trails in the borough since late 2007 with some sucess. Currently the club I helped establish North West Riders is working with Oldham Council to represent the voices of riders in the area. I am also NW regional rep and Chairman of IMBA UK (international mountain bike association) which represents riders and sets the standards at which trails are built. if you would like to talk further about progressing trails in the borough feel free to contact me either throught he NWR website www.northwestriders.org or by email try-cycles@hotmail.co.uk
