Crompton Moor Volunteer Day

Crompton Moor

Local people are being encouraged to take part in a day of volunteering on Crompton Moor this Saturday. Council officials will be leading an effort to restock heather along the 1km length of the new cycling trail.

Anyone wanting to help out should meet at the Brushes Clough car park at 1pm. You should wear old clothes, and tools will be provided. You can get more information at the council’s website here.

The Lottery-funded trail was officially opened last month. The council was actually awarded £30,000 to spend on the moor back in 2007, but since then there has been a lot of local disagreement about what to do.

The council had initially proposed replacing the existing, but unofficial and homemade, mountain bike trails with proper ones. But amid concern from many moor users about the impact on the local environment, the compromise of a family-friendly ‘green’ trail aimed at beginners was reached.

Some cyclists have expressed their disappointment through comments on past Saddleworth News articles. Daniel Bradbury wrote: “It would have been brilliant to have a challenging trail in this area. This green trail will not get used.” Another commenter, Gee, added that he thought the council had “failed to deliver” for mountain bikers.

Meanwhile, the Friends of Crompton Moor group, which has in the past expressed concern about the plans for the area, has said it wants to be constructive and work with the council. You can read more at their website here.

Credit where it is due… thanks to Laura Vayro of OMBC for organising this event.

Hopefully, this will give the Friends of Crompton Moor the chance to work with, and gain a little more respect from OMBC by acting as a cohesive group, working for the good of the moor.

In the past FoCM has (sometimes out of necessity) acted in direct opposition to the council, and have found their views and opinions cynically sidelined in favour of one OMBC employee’s plans for the moor.

I would like to see OMBC and FoCM be able to work together to allow FoCM to live up to their name, and their constitution. Unfortunately, there are huge barriers of mistrust and unspecified motive to be overcome before this can occur. It is my hope that these issues can be resolved before this special place is turned into yet another area of sanitised parkland.
