Delph & Dobcross bow out of the Heavy Woollen Cup on the toss of a coin

On Sunday Delph were due to play Wrenthorpe in a Heavy Woollen Cup 3rd round tie. Heavy rain meant a start could not be made in the match and following the toss of a coin Wrenthorpe called correctly to proceed through to the semi final.

The weather was also the ultimate winner in the match on Saturday at Scholes, which, although avoiding most of the bad weather in the area, for much of the day, finally succumbed. Scholes set a target of 249, after solid batting from the top order.

Wasim Jaffer was in supreme form at the top of the innings with a classy run a ball knock of 73 (9 4’s and 4 6’s), before falling to good boundary catch by Faisal Butt. Fellow opener Mike Smith (80) and Tom Boorman (60) took the score to 228 for 1 but Delph kept the end of the innings in check by taking 6 wickets in total.

Delph’s innings faltered at first with Irfam Zahoor going early and Arron Lilley skying a catch for 23. Kevin Hook (4) and Kyle Hogg (7) soon fell leaving Delph struggling at 5 for 82.

After a breezy knock by Butt of 17 off 9 balls, Bruce Cruse, who opened the innings, and Graeme Simpson got together and were going well to leave Delph needing 100 off 15 overs, before the rain eventually set in. Cruse top scored with 73 no (12 4’s) and Simpson finished on 17 no.
