Exhibition by William Stott of Oldham

Gallery Oldham exhibition ‘William Stott of Oldham: Great Painters are rare’

William Stott was an artist born in Oldham in 1857 at Rhodes Bank, Oldham.

He was the son to cotton spinner and business owner Abraham and Elizabeth Stott and the youngest of four brothers.

In his early years William crafted his skill at Oldham Art School under well-known artist John Houghton Haguee. He subsequently moved to Manchester Art School in 1878 after the Oldham School closed and it was there that he worked alongside other local artists such as G. H. Wimpenny and F.W. Jackson.

Later the same year William moved to Paris to continue his artistic studies and soon became well known in the French capital for his outstanding painting skills.

While in Paris he had paintings accepted for exhibitions at the Paris Salon, one of the most prestigious art venues in the world at the time. In 1881 he unveiled his most famous piece, Le Passeur and was awarded one of the Salon’s highly sought after medals.

In 1882 William Stott decided to name himself William Stott of Oldham, to avoid confusion another painter, Edward Stott, who came from Rochdale, who was in Paris at the same time as William.

He sadly died unexpectedly whilst travelling on a ferry from London to Belfast on 25 February 1900.
