Formerly homeless people complete health awareness training

A group of formerly homeless people from the charity Emmaus Mossley have completed a health improvement course run by Be Well Tameside.
Three companions – formerly homeless people who now live and work at Emmaus Mossley – completed the Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH) Level 2 Award in Understanding Health Improvement. The course covered inequalities in health, the importance of promoting improvements in health and wellbeing, and the impact of behaviour change on health and wellbeing.
Bruce, a companion at Emmaus Mossley who completed the course, said: “The course has been inspirational on many different levels. It was great meeting a wide variety of other course attendees and it has encouraged me to do further training in community mental health care.”
The accredited training course was delivered by Joanne Corcoran who works for Be Well Tameside, part of Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust. An important part of the training is to equip learners with the knowledge and skills to enable them to increase health awareness with their peers.
Joanne said: “The training brings people together from all backgrounds and we all learn from each other, but the most important thing is the ‘health improvement’ message is taken back to people we may not otherwise reach.”
Emmaus Mossley supports 24 formerly homeless people by providing them with a home and work in a community setting. The charity runs a social enterprise in Mossley, selling donated and refurbished furniture, household goods, vintage products, clothes and bikes.
Harry Barlow, Community Leader at Emmaus Mossley, said: “Training is part of a wider package of support that is offered to all Emmaus Mossley companions. Health and wellbeing development is such an important area and I am very grateful to Joanne and Be Well Tameside for supporting us with this course.”
