Hadrian’s Wall Walk For Local Charity

People from all over the world are going to be taking part in a walk along Hadrian’s Wall this summer in aid of a Huddersfield charity. Slaithwaite-based blogger Dan Hughes has helped organise the fundraiser for the Joseph Salmon Trust, which provides financial help for local parents who have lost children.

Dan walked the Dales Way footpath for the Trust two years ago, raising £6,000. When he decided to organise another walk he wrote about it on his blog, and received offers of help from around the country and from as far afield as Holland and the US. Many of those people will be flying in to join Dan on the walk in July.

Neil and Rachael Salmon set up the charity after they lost their son Joseph in 2005. Rachael explained: “Nothing in our lives thus far had prepared us for the shock and devastation Joseph’s death left behind. As well as the emotional fall-out from such a life-changing event, there comes with it the financial impact of having lost a child. “

She added: “We were ‘fortunate’ in that we could afford the things we wanted to have, to say goodbye to our son and to have a permanent memorial to him. We didn’t go over the top, and we kept things simple. But it wasn’t cheap. So, a couple of years down the line, having had some stirrings about what could we do in Joseph’s name, we decided that a charity that could help people with the financial impact of losing a child, would be a welcome one.”

More than 60 people in three different teams will be taking part. One group will walk the 84-mile distance west to east, another will follow the wall east to west, with a third group cycling on the parallel Hadrian’s Wall bike path. The fundraisers, who are sponsored by sports headwear company Buff, hope to raise more than £20,000.
