Half term family fun at the Standedge visitor centre

Standedge Visitor Centre, near Marsden, opens for the 2018 season on Monday 19 February with a full week of family fun activities on the banks of the Huddersfield Narrow Canal.

The Canal & River Trust charity, which runs the centre, promises parent and child yoga sessions, craft activities, an enhanced menu in the café and, of course, a full week of guided boat trips deep under the Pennines into Britain’s longest, deepest and highest canal tunnel.

Pulse Radio Station will get the new 2018 season off to a rocking start by broadcasting from Standedge all day on Monday. Free interactive displays also provide a chance to learn about the history of the canal and the boatmen and women who once carried cargoes on this amazing trans-Pennine waterway.

Explorers

Family activities will be run by the charity’s Canal & River Trust Explorers volunteers who are also hoping to recruit more members for the 2018 season.

Katie Hutchinson, education coordinator with the Canal & River Trust, said: “Standedge Tunnel and Visitor Centre, on the banks for the Huddersfield Narrow Canal, provide a stunning backdrop for some great holiday adventures.

“The activities are suitable for all primary age children and there’s lots to keep mums and dads occupied too. Places don’t need to be booked – just come along on the day for a fun-packed way to learn all about our amazing canals.

“At the moment, we are actively looking to recruit more volunteers to help with our valuable education work with young people. If you have a few hours to spare and would enjoy helping youngsters to explore the delights of our waterway network, we would love to hear from you.”
