Saddleworth Rangers Under 16s enjoyed a well-earned victory away to Warrington side Rylands at the weekend. With a full match report, Alan Bolton:

“Saddleworth Rangers Under 16s travelled to Warrington to play arch rivals Rylands. Never an easy game at the best of times, but the Saddleworth lads went into the game full of confidence after their National Cup exploits the previous week.

“Rangers started the game on fire playing some scintillating rugby, Scott Booth crossing the line first, only for the referee to disallow for being in touch, Danny Lomax was next, with his effort clearly in the try line, but adjudged to be ‘short’ by the referee. A great defensive effort from Jack Connor tackled the Rylands winger over the try line forcing a drop out. A great reverse pass from Ben White sent Ryan Maneely over to score the first try.

“Scott Booth crossed again only to be pulled back for a forward pass this time, a possible four tries in the first 15 minutes. Rangers second try came shortly before half time, a great high cross field kick from Ben White was collected by Danny Lomax who off-loaded to Chris Bolton who scored well in the corner, making the half time score 10-0.

“The second half started poorly for Rangers, making unforced errors and some crazy off-loads. Rylands started to come more into the game, drawing Rangers into a forwards battle. A minor scuffle resulted in each team getting a player sin binned. Rylands got their first points of the game from a Rangers mistake to make the score 10-6.

“The Rangers lads settled the nerves with a good set, Ben White kicking through on the last and Josh Bradbury sprinting though to touch down. Lewis Galbraith, showed great determination and skill to cross for Rangers’ final try making the score 18-6. Rylands completed the scoring with a try in the final seconds to make the final score 18-10 to Rangers.

“In fairness with the possession and scoring opportunities particularly in the first half, the winning margin should have been a lot more comfortable than it was. Man of the Match went to Danny Richardson who was practically unstoppable in the first half, Best Defence once again went Ashley Webb whose work rate was outstanding and Coaches Award went to the ever reliable Lewis Ralph who along with the wingers and centres dealt with all the high balls superbly.”

Many thanks to Alan for that report. As for Saddleworth’s first team, they’re now in the relegation places of the National Conference League Premier Division. Their last match, on 15 January, ended in a 22-all draw at East Hull. There’s more information at the league’s website here.
