High Winds Lead To Long Delays On M62

There have been lengthy delays in both directions on the M62 at Saddleworth this afternoon, as very high winds caused traffic problems.

A lorry overturned at lunchtime on the westbound carriageway near Scammonden at J23 (Outlane), spilling its diesel across both sides of the road. This picture of the incident was uploaded to Twitter by billy_tir. Congestion stretched back to J25 at Brighouse.

Meanwhile, traffic on the eastbound M62 was also moving slowly because of the accident, with long delays reported between J23 and J21 (Milnrow).

The motorway wasn’t expected to return to normal until 4pm at the earliest.

There are further stories about this from the Examiner here and the Guardian’s Northerner blog here.
