Hosepipe Ban To Take Effect On Friday

A hosepipe ban will come into force across Saddleworth and the rest of the north west of England this Friday. The decision by water supplier United Utilities follows the driest start to the year since records began in 1929.

Water levels in some reservoirs and lakes have fallen to below half their normal levels. Even the rain which has been falling this morning won’t be enough to replenish stocks in time to avoid the ban, which will take effect at 6am on Friday. However, the company has described the ban as “temporary” and, with more rain forecast for the coming days, it may not be in place for all that long.

The ban means you won’t be allowed to use hosepipes or sprinklers, although it’ll still be permitted to use a watering can on the garden or a bucket and sponge on your car. Anyone caught breaking the hosepipe ban could be fined up to £1,000.
