Marsden Train Death Not Suspicious

Police have confirmed the death of a person who was hit by a train at Marsden Station yesterday was not suspicious. They’ve also revealed the victim was a man.

Officers from both British Transport Police and the West Yorkshire force attended the scene following the incident, which happened just after 3 o’clock. The man was hit by a westbound First Transpennine service, and apparently died instantly.

It’s not known if the man stepped into the path of the train deliberately, or whether the tragedy was an accident.

Passengers reported feeling a sudden jolt as the train passed through the station. They were then kept away from the rear of the train as an ambulance crew, police and, later, undertakers attended the scene.

The incident led to the suspension of trains in the area, but all services returned to normal within three hours. Passengers from the train involved were taken on to Stalybridge and Manchester by coach.

(UPDATE: Police believe the dead man to be 18-year-old Gareth Oates, who had gone missing from his home in Suffolk)
