Two photographs of Saddleworth School in the early 1960s have been sent to us by Peter Fox.

Peter is the curator at Saddleworth Museum and Art Gallery in Uppermill.

It is interesting to see how Saddleworth School looked just after the main buildings were built.

A sports hall and junior block building were later added.

The image below shows the original school building, taken from what is now the main drive.

Both images are taken from Pickhill Fields by Colin Fox – Saddleworth Museum Archives.

    Very nice.

Just imagine if the 1960’s Uppermill residents had launched a ‘No New School” campaign just like the Digglers are now?

NIMBYs always the enemy of progress.

  • Interested Uppermill Resident says:

What is most interesting to note from these photographs is the full extent of the size of the current Saddleworth School site. I feel sure that if the whole site were to be considered then a re-build on the current site should be feasible.

This is the school as it was is it not ? Not what it is like now with extra buildings car parking and sports . Lockers situated outside as there isn’t space inside , outside shelters to stand /sit under at breaks and dinner as the canteen isn’t big enough . Not sure the different levels work that well either .
