Oldham library to host first-ever ‘Comic Con’
Reporter: Stuart Littleford
Oldham Library is hosting its first-ever ’Comic Con’ event where everyone is invited to meet their friendly local superheroes for free.
On Saturday May 6 fans will be able to grab a selfie with comic book heroes including Batman, Wonder Woman, Spiderman, Super Girl, Green Arrow and even the Swamp Thing between 10am and 4pm.
The library will be filled with all things geeky and good including readings, discussion panels, Q and As and a chance to play some retro games.
Well-known authors and artists, including Emmy nominated writer Mike Garley (Adventure Time and Wallace and Gromit); professional comics artist and illustrator Dave Windett, (Marvel UK, Count Duckula, Ace Ventura, Loony and Tiny Toons) and Jon Laight the brain behind Level 8 Comics and self-published Brethren Born will be there meeting fans and signing comics and merchandise.
Anyone interested in putting together their own comic books can join in with drawing demonstrations and comic creating workshops.
Comic collectors can even fill in any gaps in their collection at one of various stalls selling comics and merchandise from favourite publishers and films.
Adults and children are also encouraged to dress for the occasion and join in the afternoon’s cosplay competition – with winner and runner up prizes in best group, adult and children categories.
Dave Whittle, event organiser, said: “This will be a fun and free event and I want everyone to enjoy themselves. Please come as any cosplay that you want, cosplay as movie, anime, superhero and anything and everything in-between. Anyone in costume is welcome to enter the competition so bring your best super suit. And if full costume is not your bag why not have your face painted as your favourite superhero or cartoon character?”
Maggie Kufeldt Executive Director of Health and Wellbeing, added: “We’re really excited about our first Comic Con and it’s something we see becoming a regular feature in the Oldham Libraries’ calendar.”
“Oldham library service offers so much more than books and events like this illustrate that point. Our libraries are our community hubs, offering free resources to help residents find a job, start a business, entertain their little ones, watch a show, use the free internet and Wi-Fi or just read a book.”
