Oldham’s Police Chief Hails Neighbourhood Teams

The most senior policeman in Oldham has revealed that crime is down, and has praised the work of the borough’s neighbourhood officers, including those in Saddleworth and Lees.

Announcing an overall year-on-year drop in recorded crime of 4% between April 2010 and March of this year, Chief Superintendent Tim Forber said yesterday that he was “delighted” with the figures. He said local teams had targeted small numbers of prolific criminals, leading to the fall in the headline crime rate.

In a statement, he commented: “This is testament not only to the skill and dedication of my officers, but also the contribution of partner agencies like the council and members of the public. It is very much a shared success.”

He also confirmed that the downward trend has continued in April, May and June, with a further 3% fall in the number of recorded victims of crime. Perhaps most strikingly, incidents of anti-social behaviour declined by almost a quarter compared with the same period in 2010.

Of particular interest to Saddleworth folk will be the policing operation on Whit Friday, which this year resulted in 12 arrests, quite a contrast with the 27 recorded last year.

Ch Supt Forber went on: “In April a new proactive team was set up at Oldham to target the borough’s most prolific offenders, and in its first two months the team made 194 arrests and carried out 154 stop checks. In the last 12 months my officers have made 8,504 arrests, and are working tirelessly to track down those responsible for crime. I feel strongly that criminals should never benefit financially from their actions, and in the last year we have recovered £398,346 from illegal enterprises.”

REPORTED crime may well have fallen.

Why bother reporting crime when we know the police won’t bother to turn up.

If burglary and mobile phone theft didn’t need a crime number you would see a massive “fall” in crime as people only report this to get the crime number.

Ask anyone if they feel the police turn up when you need them for say anti social behaviour. Few will agree
Ask anyone if they say they feel the police protect them. Few will agree.
Ask anyone if they think the police pick and choose which crimes to be bothered to deal with. Many will agree.

It’s about time the police did their jobs and were held to account when they don’t. They are like politicians and the media. Totally unaccountable.

If the police don’t do their job, what can members of the public do about it? NOTHING.

It’s not like they are paid by us (which we have to pay for under the threat of prison) to do the job we ask them to do, or anything like that is it!
