A large fire has been burning on Rishworth Moor this evening. It’s the fourth moorland blaze in our area in the last week, following separate fires at Marsden, Crompton and Saddleworth moors.

The West Yorkshire Fire Service says that three square kilometres of Rishworth Moor has been affected by the fire. Crews from Halifax, Littleborough, Illingworth and Todmorden have been called in to battle the blaze, which was clearly visible from the M62.

Earlier today, a fire affected the Ashway Hey area of Saddleworth Moor, and yesterday four fire crews brought a fire under control on Crompton Moor near Denshaw. Last week, a fire left part of Pule Hill on Marsden Moor badly charred.

It’s not known what caused the different fires, although Crompton Moor in particular has suffered several arson incidents in recent years. Carelessly discarded cigarettes have also been blamed for similar moorland blazes in the past.

Same thing happens regularly in Darwen especially during school hols!

i saw this fire myself… was pretty weird – looked like it was in some set pattern or something; not something that would have naturally happened from a discarded cigarette or anything

almost like a crop circle of fire?

I have just driven back from Leeds over the M62 and the fire on the hills to the North was like a scene from End Of Days

You could almost understand why a motorist might have started the fire on Saturday. Because of the women falling from the bridge at Jctn 23 on the M62, the police, in their ‘wisdon’ diverted 4 lanes of eastbound traffic off at Jctn 22 onto the Halifax road and left them to rot. I never saw a single traffic cop on duty and the worst hold-up was the queue at at 3-way set of construction lights just before Triangle. Whoever ‘planned’ this alternative route without deploying even one extra policeman should have been sacked for ‘conduct not befitting a grown-up’.

  • Hi, I am a direct decendant of the Rishworths of Rishworth village and found this sad news of the fires. I hope everything is now under control?
