River Colne Shows Effects Of Linthwaite Fire

The River Colne has begun to show visible effects of the pollution caused by yesterday’s fire at the Grosvenor Chemicals plant in Linthwaite. This picture was sent in by reader Robert Bray, and shows the river foaming up near Crosland Moor this morning.

Concern about chemicals leaking into the river has already forced the closure of the Huddersfield Broad Canal, and part of the Huddersfield Narrow Canal. A team of experts has also been brought in to monitor air quality in the area.

(UPDATE 25/5: British Waterways has now re-opened the Huddersfield Narrow Canal. However, the Huddersfield Broad Canal remains closed, because the pollution hasn’t dispersed through the river system as quickly as had been expected. The canal is expected to be shut for at least another 24 hours. There’s more information here)
