Saddleworth Enjoy Victory Over Moorside

Saddleworth’s cricketers quickly bounced back from their cup defeat to Bamford Fieldhouse, with a weekend win over Moorside in the Saddleworth League. Here’s a match report by Graham Oldham:

RETURNING TO LEAGUE ACTION the Saddleworth first XI put aside the disappointment of defeat in the Tanner Cup by easily defeating bottom club Moorside by 150 runs at the Well-i-Hole.

Batting first Saddleworth made 221/7 in their 45 overs. Skipper Steve Howard compiled 83 not out, professional Peter Skuse made 48 and Ian Hague scored 32. For Moorside, Lee Warburton bowled unchanged for 23 overs to finish with 4/92.

In reply Moorside made a promising start but then lost in-form batsman Francis Sutherland lbw and fellow opener Richard Baines to a popped hamstring running a quick single. Wickets then fell regularly as Moorside were bowled out for 71, Skuse taking 5/36. Howard completed a fine personal performance with two wickets, a catch and a direct hit for a run out.

In the second team match at Turf Pit Lane, Saddleworth dismissed Moorside for 88 (Jason Fish 6/23) but were then bowled out themselves for 69 (Pegler 5/34).
