Saddleworth-based astronomy expert Prof Brian Cox was given the OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours over the weekend. Prof Cox, who’s originally from Oldham and now lives in Grasscroft, has described it as a “wonderful accolade.”

He presented high-profile BBC series Wonders Of The Solar System earlier this year. He’s now working on a follow-up, Wonders Of The Universe, to be broadcast in 2011.

It’s not his first brush with fame. Brian played keyboards for 1990s band D:Ream, best remembered for their number one hit Things Can Only Get Better. He combined his pop career with studying for a PhD at the University of Manchester, where he now works in the School of Physics and Astronomy.

In a statement issued by the uni, Prof Cox said: “I could never have dreamed when I was a student here that I would be receiving such an important honour as an OBE. Every time I receive an award or honour such as this I feel as though it is further recognition of science. I feel there is a need to take science more seriously in this country and hopefully we are beginning to turn around the public perception.”
