Saddleworth Women’s Institute first Christmas Market

The WI Christmas Market at the Saddleworth Hotel

The WI Christmas Market at the Saddleworth Hotel

On Wednesday 6 November, Saddleworth Women’s Institute held their first Christmas Market at the Saddleworth Hotel. There were over 30 stalls offering a huge variety and selection of crafts, jewellery, handbags, handmade mirrors, clothing, candles, festive confectionery, jams and speciality foods to name but a few.

It was a resounding success with over 200 eager shoppers all fortified with a glass of mulled wine provided by the Saddleworth Hotel. The WI would like to thank Anthony and his staff from the Hotel who worked hard to provide the market with a fantastic atmosphere, Christmas carols, beautiful decorations, a roaring log fire and a constant supply of the mulled wine.

In addition to happy shoppers and stall holders, the WI also made a profit of over £500 for their 2013 Charity Oldham Bereavement Support Service. They say the Christmas market will definitely be a regular part of the WI Calendar from now on!

Their final meeting of the year will be on December 4 with their Christmas party, a traditional Christmas evening with mulled wine, mince pies and songs led by the WI Singing Group.

Getting ready for 2014

The Saddleworth WI and Saddleworth Parish Council Shop Local Festival 2014 will be held at the Civic Hall, Uppermill on Sunday 16 March.

This will be the fourth year for this highly successful and enjoyable event. This is a popular venue for local retailers to showcase their products as well as raising funds for their chosen charities. Shop Local 2013 once again proved a massive hit with the stallholders with over 700 visitors, raising more than £1000 for charity.

For further information and/or to book one of the 40 stalls available, please e-mail tricia.leigh@btinternet.com or call 07866 541560.

Further details of all the WI forthcoming events, activities, subgroups and our programme of speakers can be found on their website www.saddleworthwi.com. They have a variety of groups which meet regularly including Food and Drink, Cinema and Theatre, Book club, Singing Group and Walking.

New members and guests are always welcome at WI meetings and members can attend up to three meetings before joining with the annual membership fee due at the January 2014 meeting. They ask for a voluntary donation of 50p from members and £2 from non-members per meeting towards running costs and refreshments.

The WI would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported them in 2013 with best wishes for Christmas and the New Year.
