Tea at 2; Uppermill Cub Scouts invite the Saddleworth Carers Group to afternoon tea

This afternoon, the 20th Oldham Cubs put on a delicious spread of sandwiches, quiches, cakes and scones, and served tea and coffee to the members of the Saddleworth Carers Group. They invited the Carers to join them at the Methodist Centre in Uppermill where the cubs meet every Tuesday evening.

The Cubs are working on an initiative called ‘A Million Hands’ and as part of it they chose to find out about Dementia Awareness. This all works towards their Community Action Badge.

Dr Eamon O’Daly, chair of the Saddleworth Carer’s Group had previously been invited to give the Cubs a talk about Dementia and caring for those that have the condition.

“I was very happily surprised at the Cubs interest in the condition of Dementia. They asked some very interesting questions. One of the questions was this : “What’s the difference between Dementia and being demented?” ” said Eamon.

Bill Nunwick

One of the visitors enjoying the sandwiches this afternoon was Bill Nunwick who was proudly sporting a Chief Scout Silver Wolf. The Silver Wolf is the unrestricted gift of the Chief Scout and is only awarded for service of a most exceptional nature, so the highest award that can be made.  Bill told me that he has been in Scouting for an incredible 73 yrs and that he rose through the ranks and eventually became President of the Heywood District. At 92, he has a lot of fond memories of his time in the Scouts, and was enjoying being waited on and speaking with the Cubs in his now home town of Uppermill.

Debbie Abrahams MP for Oldham East and Saddleworth also popped in during her very busy schedule and found time to take tea and cakes and to chat with the Carers. Eamon O’Daly said : ” Debbie has been very helpful in supporting Carers with basic needs for their loved ones with Dementia, such as reducing delays in getting a blue badge and encouraging them to claim Attendance Allowance. You’d think a lot of people in our area have a lot of money, but that’s not necessarily true and the allowance is greatly needed. Shes been very supportive.”
