The Oldham East And Saddleworth By-Election Candidate Interviews
The campaign is all but over. Now it’s almost time for people across Saddleworth to vote in the by-election. A total of ten candidates are standing, and you can read and listen to interviews with eight of them by clicking on their names below.
In the interviews, each candidate gives their thoughts on a variety of issues important to Saddleworth. If you haven’t made your mind up yet, hopefully these articles will help you!
Debbie Abrahams (Labour)
Derek Adams (BNP)
Kashif Ali (Conservative)
Peter Allen (Green)
Loz Kaye (Pirate Party UK)
Stephen Morris (English Democrats)
Paul Nuttall (UKIP)
Elwyn Watkins (Liberal Democrats)
The other two candidates are David Bishop of the Bus Pass Elvis Party and Nick “The Flying Brick” Delves from the Monster Raving Loony Party. Sadly, I wasn’t able to catch up with them during what’s been a very busy campaign!
You can vote between 7am and 10pm. Saddleworth News will be providing live updates from the count after the polls close tomorrow night, so remember to check back here for all the latest news!
I have enjoyed reading your coverage of the by-election – congrats to the team behind it. Very easy to produce a one sided biased approach but I think you have avoided this and that must be good news. Now its all over bar the voting – personally I will be supporting Elwyn as I think he really does deserve it – what surprises me is the number of my Tory friends – always blue – who this time are saying they are going to support Elwyn – I think this is going to be very close!
Hi David. Many thanks for your kind comment. There’s not much of a team involved as normally I run the website on my own, and fit it around my proper job of caring for my baby daughter. But I must thank Stuart Coleman from Diggle who’s supplied dozens of excellent photos to me in recent weeks!
Great stuff, Richard, I think you have been very fair. The ‘big boys’ of the mainstream media can be quite exasperating in the way that they censor and delete comments. First they show an article and invite comment. They then delete any replies that they do not like – especially if they are articulate, well thought out – and TRUE! This leaves an entirely false picture of people’s real views. I have noticed that they also leave in any brainless comments that can be attributed to a ‘right wing’ view, presumably in order to encourage the stereotyping of ‘right wing’ thugs and bogeymen. Who knows – maybe they put those comments in too! Anyway – hats off to the Saddleworth News for the election coverage – and who have played with a straight bat.
ANYONE BUT ELWYN!!
Yes Richard, you have done a very good job! I only discovered the site by following links. I was very interested in the hustings issue and that is what led me here. The site has brought to my attention issues of freedom of speech that were very disturbing. Your take on it has been impartial especially allowing the comments to run without censorship – except of course any foul comments. Thanks and well done
I second that George!
yes Richard a brilliant resource although to impartial for my liking!
As an interested observer (LD Cllr in Bedford), I’d like to add my thanks to you for the coverage.
It’s usually sites like these that you get the real “meaty” items from by-elections and you’ve done that.
Obviously hope Elwyn wins, if nothing else for the courage in taking on the Labour machine by going to court.
