Together in one voice – mass sing-a-long across GM

Greater Manchester will once again harness the power of music and the benefits of singing to come ‘Together In One Voice’.

On Thursday 28 May, 7.30pm, Greater Manchester will fill the streets with music as local residents and famous faces come ‘Together in One Voice’ for a mass sing-a-long from their doorsteps and windows.

We will join together for a 30-minute programme of songs, drawn from Greater Manchester’s rich musical heritage, past and present.

A hotbed of culture and creativity, Greater Manchester is the largest urban populous outside London. Spanning 500 square miles and with hundreds of community organisations involved, this unique and ambitious event will be livestreamed for audiences as it happens and then shared with the nation in full on Sunday 31st May.

Together In One Voice is a community led event for the whole of Greater Manchester. It is being delivered by partners Co-op, Manchester City Council, GMCA and Manchester International Festival (MIF).

The event will be livestreamed via YouTube as part of Manchester International Festival’s online programme MIF LIVE. It will also be captured under social distancing guidelines with drones, street cameras and residents’ own films (user generated content) – all following social distancing guidelines – and edited together to produce a film set for national release on the evening of Sunday 31st May.

The event will promote community spirit and encourage everyone to take care of their mental health during this coronavirus crisis. Choir Director Dan McDwyer will be providing online choir rehearsals in the lead up to the event to promote the benefits of singing for wellbeing, including friendship, group participation and fun.

How do I get involved?

  1. On Thursday 28th May at 7.30pm visit togethermcr.com – take your tablet/phone and head to your window or doorstep to film yourself and members of your household taking part in the online singalong. This will last roughly 30 mins, leading into the regular ‘clap for our carers’ at 8pm. If you are part of a group or collective, get creative and think about how you can all be identified in the video you send in e.g. wearing your promotional t-shirt, waving a flag, showing the products you make etc. You’ll be able to upload your filmed footage from 28th May at togethermcr.com and you will be asked to include the name of your group or how you want to be named.
  2.  Your footage, along with other footage captured on the night by our film crews under social distancing guidelines with drones and street cameras will be edited together to produce a full show for national release on the evening of Sunday 31st May
  3. You can also help to spread the word – don’t forget to tag @togethermcr and use the hashtag #togetherinonevoice when posting on social media

Remember, no singing experience is required, just a sense of community spirit.

The call to action is twofold; a) for people to participate or watch and enjoy on 28 May then again on 31 May, and b) for the event itself to promote mental health and well being through singing and also, for people who need them, to promote Greater Manchester’s mental health services which have been set up to help people during the pandemic.

This event is partnered by the Co-op – Manchester City Council – Greater Manchester Combined Authority – Manchester International Festival (MIF)
