Tributes To Marsden Train Victim

Gareth Oates

Tributes have been paid to the teenager who was hit and killed by a train at Marsden Station on Tuesday afternoon. The victim has now been formally identified as Gareth Oates, an 18-year-old student from Suffolk who had gone missing earlier in the day.

Gareth, who was from Stowmarket, had attended a college class in Bury St Edmunds as usual on Tuesday morning. He then travelled to Yorkshire by train. Although Gareth is believed to have had contacts in Bradford and York, it’s not known how he came to be in Marsden.

Friends of Gareth have been leaving messages on a Facebook page set up in his memory. The group already has more than 700 members.

Shelley Cane wrote that Gareth “will be sadly missed but never forgotten by everyone whose life he touched.” Lucy Eglinton added, “you may not have realised it but so many people loved you… you were the most lovely person anyone could have known.”

An inquest into Gareth’s death has been opened and adjourned at Bradford Coroner’s Court.
