Walkers Are Welcome Status For Marsden

Peel Street, Marsden

Marsden has become the first village in our area to win Walkers Are Welcome status. It’s a national scheme recognising places which make an effort to help and encourage ramblers.

Kirklees Council this week approved the idea of Marsden joining the initiative, which was started three years ago and already has 36 other members from around the UK. The first was Hebden Bridge, and Mytholmroyd, Otley and Ilkley are among the other towns and villages involved.

To get Walkers Are Welcome status, a town or village must demonstrate that paths and other facilities are well-maintained, and that there’s plenty of information available locally for ramblers visiting the area. Becoming a member should allow Marsden to share ideas with other walker-friendly villages across the country, as local leaders try to find new ways to attract tourists.

You can get more information by visiting the official Walkers Are Welcome site here.

And there’s more from the Huddersfield Examiner here.
