When Roy Castle Came To Dobcross Band Club

It’s another in our series of classic Saddleworth videos on YouTube, and this time we’re going back to 1983, and an edition of the BBC series The Brass Beat focusing on the Dobcross Silver Band.

Presenter Roy Castle, originally from Scholes in the Holme Valley himself, visited the village band club and interviewed band officials. We also get plenty of opportunity to hear music from the band during the half-hour programme.

Accompanying the music are images of Dobcross as it was then, which offer a fascinating glimpse into the recent past in their own right.

The show is in three parts, and all are embedded here. The videos were uploaded to YouTube by John Whitmore. There are a few moments when the quality of the original recording drops a bit, but the programme is still well worth watching.

If you remember the show being filmed, or if you or someone you know appeared in it, it would be very interesting to hear any recollections. Please do leave a comment below this article if you’d like to share them with Saddleworth News readers.

(Editor’s note: I’m currently away on holiday. The copyright in the videos belongs to the BBC. There’s more Dobcross brass in Monday’s post about Whit Friday through the years here. Tuesday’s post regarding the classic footage of Saddleworth Rangers is here, and yesterday’s article regarding the video to Kingdom of Rust by Doves is here)
