“Why it’s important to “Be prepared!”

Author – Julie Crowley of Clear Minds

Even if you were never a Scout preparation is key to success and stress-free living

“Failing to prepare is preparing to fail” – my daughters got fed up hearing this from me as I am naturally organised and it comes easily to me.  Not for everyone though!

Why is it important?

Our ability to keep learning, means we naturally tend to prefer being prepared for the ‘next time’ – next situation, event, conversation, problem etc. – then we know how to do it better, if not perfectly (we keep learning).

Improving your actions, your choices, your behaviours and attitude – sometimes it’s a natural defence mechanism, another a more efficient way or performing your task or

Being ready and able to take an opportunity you missed out on last time!

It also saves energy both mind and body – instead of keep repeating some steps you can avoid that, or you can make them shorter, or just know what comes next without planning then acting all over again!

You can’t improve your preparation if you haven’t experienced it first, so we keep improving our efficiency at anything we do.   We learn quickly and, in survival, learn immediately and remain hyper alert to that action or behaviour!  This doesn’t always help reduce your stress but you are more aware ‘next time’.

Acknowledge what’s happened and the problems you encountered then analyse it – break it down into steps so you can make the necessary changes

You can then record it – on paper or digitally, simply memories it and learn it, or decide to keep tweaking the process until it works quickly and easily for you

When could you be more prepared?

  • Something you have to repeat often, but takes a long time or is long winded
  • Something is a struggle for you to remember
  • When it becomes harder, not easier!

Know yourself and your strengths so you can improve the next time.   Weaknesses you can improve on or even avoid (pass to someone else perhaps) will help you in future situations like this one!
