£1m Boost For Dunwood Park

More than a million pounds is going to be spent improving Dunwood Park in Shaw. Oldham Council says the work will turn the beauty spot into “the equal of any park nationwide.”

The council’s been awarded £1.093m in lottery money for the project. It’s also putting in £270,000 of its own cash.

New features planned for the park include a community meeting room, extra toilets and an adventure playground. The park’s existing amenities, such as the bowling green, tennis courts, gardens and wooded areas, will all be refurbished.

However, the council says that’s only part of the plan. It aims to use the planning, design, construction and management of the improved park to provide education and training opportunities for local people. The council says that hasn’t been done before.

Activists from The Friends of Dunwood Park group have spent years campaigning for this sort of investment. The group’s chair, Mike McGrother, is “delighted” their efforts have finally proved successful.

He added: “With the provision of new and better facilities we will continue to promote the development of the park as a living community. But just as before, we cannot do this on our own. We invite everyone now to be part of the future of Dunwood Park.”

There’s a Dunwood Park community website here.
