Birthday Celebrations at the Hazelnut Bakery!

Described as one of the “hidden gems” of Saddleworth, the Hazelnut Bakery is a specialist cake shop in Delph village centre which celebrated its first birthday last month.

The cake shop has built a reputation for baking delicious cakes made from the best locally sourced ingredients that are beautifully designed and crafted with incredible attention to detail.

The bakery is known locally for creating the cake models that marked the closure of the BAE Systems Chadderton site and the centenary of Greenfield Primary School.

It is just over a year since Deputy Mayor, Olwen Chadderton, opened their shop to the public, the business has gone from strength to strength. Chris Jenkins, who runs the bakery with his wife Hazel, said “many businesses have suffered during the recession but our reputation for quality has meant that even though many people have less money, they would prefer to save up and buy something special like the cakes we offer.”

It has been a memorable year for the pair, who have created hundreds of cakes since opening their shop in January 2012, and their services are so in demand that they have received bookings as far in advance as the summer of 2014!

In addition to decorating their exquisite cakes, Creative Director Hazel Jenkins teaches sugarcraft skills to others in monthly cake decorating classes and said that “people love making cakes at home, and we can show them how to decorate them to a professional standard. Having our own shop gives us an ideal space for teaching classes and we also now stock a wide range of cake decorating equipment”.

Their cake shop has also held more than 20 parties since they launched them early last year. “We mostly do cupcake decorating parties for children’s birthdays, but we offer a range of party packages for both children and adults who are looking for something different to do to mark a special occasion” says Hazel who is responsible for making sure everyone has a great time at their parties! They can be themed for children and include everything from the cake to balloons and party games, and grown up party goers can enjoy a complimentary cocktail while they create their own fabulous cupcakes.

To celebrate their first birthday the bakery has launched a new range of treats for their Saturday café. Chris, who is in charge of baking their delicious cakes, said “we are open during the week to work on our bigger cakes and plan for parties, but open the bakery up as a café every Saturday from 10.30am – 4pm. This gives people the chance to pop in and chat to us, relax and read the paper, enjoy something sweet with a pot of tea, or take away a box of treats to enjoy at home.”

Hazel added that “it’s nice to have Saturday as a treat day because it reminds me of being younger, when my Dad would take us all into town and buy us a cake if we’d been good!”

More information on their cakes, classes and parties can be found on their website www.thehazelnutbakery.co.uk or by visiting the bakery in Delph which is open Wednesday to Saturday.
