Boil water advice for drinking water in parts of Saddleworth remains in place

Reporter: Stuart Littleford

The boil water advice for drinking water in parts of Saddleworth remains in place this evening and will last for at least the next 48 hours say United Utilities.

Saddleworth News reported early this morning that an issue with mains water was affecting parts of Saddleworth, especially Greenfield, as well as Stalybridge, Ashton-under-Lyne, Hyde and Dukinfield.

The fault at the treatment works has now been fixed we understand and the situation is slowly improving, but affected householders are being told to continue to boil their water for drinking until further notice.

For those affected the advice is to boil the tap water for drinking, food preparation and brushing of teeth. You can continue to use tap water for general domestic purposes such as bathing and flushing toilets. If your water looks dirty or cloudy, it is recommend to wait until the water has cleared before washing clothes.

The advice has been issued as a result of an overnight technical fault on United Utilities equipment at Buckton Castle water treatment works, which supplies parts of the Saddleworth area.

United Utilities say the fault has now been rectified, but some water was not treated to the “usual high standard” and has entered the local pipe network.

They have issued a sincere apology to everyone who will be affected by this issue and hope to be able to lift the boil water advice as soon as possible. They say they will keep everyone informed about the situation along with local media.

United Utilities are proactively contacting vulnerable customers in Saddleworth to make sure they have adequate support and they would also ask all customers to tell friends, family and neighbours who they know live in Saddleworth and other affected areas.

All schools in the impacted areas will be able to open as normal tomorrow as United Utilities says it is “taking all the necessary measures” now for this to happen.

Customers will receive compensation automatically and this will be paid proactively in the next 5 working days, so there is no need to contact them about this.
