Campaign to Save Dobcross Post Office

sykes-watkins-post-office-300x209You may have thought that the problems of the Post Office and Royal Mail had been solved, following the closure of small sub post offices round the country and better relations between the postman’s union and the new Royal Mail management.

Apparently not, as Royal Mail is trying to cut it’s costs still further. Royal Mail, now a commercial company pays Post Office Ltd to pay sub postmasters to provide premises for local sorting offices and supervise their operation.

There are three local sorting offices in Saddleworth and Royal Mail want to close them all and sorting would be done in Oldham.

Sub Postmasters would be compensated but the problem in Dobcross is that the closure of the sorting office here means that the whole business is no longer viable and Dobcross Post Office, the only shop in the village will close.

It also means you would have to trail to Oldham to pick up a parcel if you are out when the postman calls.

This is not good enough and so all local Lib Dems councillors and Saddleworth based Lib Dem MEP, Chris Davies are writing to Post Office Ltd and Royal Mail and urging them to think again.

What you can do:

Please drop off letters of support to Dobcross Post Office as soon as you can. The more letters of support the postmaster has the better our case.

Here is the a sample letter from the DVC that people can use:

Dear Mr Utting,

RE: Proposal to close Dobcross postal sorting office

I wish to register my objection to Royal Mail’s proposal to close the sorting office in Dobcross and relocate to Oldham delivery office.

This proposal would lead to the full closure of the Post Office and accompanying shop in Dobcross, which is the only shop Dobcross. I rely upon Dobcross Post Office and this would be a big inconvenience for me.

Furthermore it is essential that the Post Office and shop remain open for those in Dobcross community who absolutely depend upon it: eg there are many elderly people in Dobcross and people with disabilities and people without transportation (the bus services are irregular).

I urge you not to go ahead with this proposal.

Why can’t Saddleworth keep unspoilt? Hope Dobcross Post Office survives.

Interesting all these tags under the story…Chris Davies, Lib Dems, Garth Harkness. Remind me again who sold off the Royal Mail at a fraction of its worth!
