Concern Over Springhead Dog Fouling

A local resident has raised concerns about dog fouling on the pitch at Springhead FC. Michael Coleman used this week’s live webchat with Saddleworth police and council officials to say he’d had to remove more than 20 different bits of poo from the playing surface before Saturday’s second team game could take place.

He said: “It is not strangers from out of the area that are allowing this to happen, it is local residents. Ironically, the same residents allow their children to attend the very successful soccer school run by the club for the benefit of the local community.”

Mr Coleman warned: “I don’t have to tell you the consequences if any of this waste gets into the eyes and mouths of the children using the facility. It is obvious that the signs that have been erected have not acted as a deterrent to these people.” He called for the police to take “strong” action on the matter.

The Oldham Council Neighbourhood Manager for Saddleworth and Lees, Lisa MacDonald, responded: “We are aware there is an ongoing problem and we have tried to improve the situation with extra signs and bins. This is still a serious issue with potential health risks.”

She then urged local people to contact the council with details of anyone who might be flouting the restrictions, and when, saying: “We can then target enforcement more effectively. We are currently discussing a campaign to raise awareness of the heath risks involved.”

Along with Ms MacDonald, the webchat featured the council’s Community Champion Cllr Barbara Beeley, as well as Insp Danny Milovanovic and Pc Steph Whitehead from our neighbourhood policing team. It took place online in response to poor attendance at some recent traditional-style public meetings.

Various issues were discussed, and if you want to read a transcript you can do so here.

Surely the increasing occurrences of crime is more concerning than dog dirt? Thats what the police should only be investigating

  • Elaine says:

I am a dog owner and can well understand the annoyance over this problem its disgusting, through these irresponsible people dogs will be banned from everywhere. Its the same in all walks of life the ones who dont care spoil it for the ones that do, and they will still carry on flouting the rules and the laws.

  • Elaine says:

I agree entirely with you Andy about what the police should be investigating.
