Debbie Abrahams MP has responded to questions put to her from Saddleworth News following reports she had hired a ‘spin doctor’ at a cost of over £2000 to the tax payer.

Mrs Abrahams told Saddleworth News: “I take my job as an MP very seriously. I undertake over 3,500 pieces of casework every year on behalf of my constituents. I scrutinise the Government in Committees and during debates which involves policy analysis and research. I also co-ordinate special projects across Oldham and Saddleworth which have been identified as priorities by local people such as the Oldham Fairness Commission.

“I believe it is also part of my job to be in regular contact with my constituents.  As such I am out and about knocking on doors and telephoning residents most weekends. On top of this, I produce a monthly e-newsletter, and provide up to date communications via my website, social media, local media outlets, and leaflets – enabling me to stay in touch with local people. To help me do this I employ caseworkers and parliamentary staff. I also use specialist communications support.”

IPSA Chair, Sir Ian Kennedy told Saddleworth News: “I have heard MPs receive criticism for their stationery bills (it is standard for employers to provide paper, ink, staplers etc, but some suggest MPs should be treated differently), for travelling (even though they work in two locations – their constituency and Westminster), and even for having a website developed (there are very few organisations which don’t have one and which don’t need some expertise to help develop one).”
