December’s Saddleworth Independent

The latest edition of the Saddleworth Independent is out now. It’s available for free from shops, Post Offices, pubs, and various other pick-up points around the area.

As usual it’s got a great mixture of news, features and sport, focusing on positive stories about Saddleworth. The front page features the tale of a dramatic delivery, but you’ll have to pick up a copy to find out more!

The paper’s editor, Ken Bennett, has revealed this month’s issue has an extra 2,500 copies, bringing the Independent’s total print run to 8,000. It was also recently Highly Commended in the Weekly Newspaper of the Year category at the O2 Media Awards North West, despite being a monthly.

Ken has also announced plans to expand into Mossley with a new publication called the Mossley Eye. He commented: “The success of our Saddleworth operation shows there is a yearning for people to have their own, totally-focused quality newspaper – dedicated to covering news, features and events in specific communities.”

(Full disclosure: The Saddleworth Independent advertises with Saddleworth News)

  • Cllr Ken Hulme says:

Great interview with Retired Squadron Leader Rob Knotts who is Chair of Voice of Saddleworth on page 15.

Incredible letter from the Chairman of Saddleworth Parish Council denouncing Rob Knotts and those who criticise the council as ‘ignorant, disgruntled and prejudiced malcontent’s.’mmmm not a good move Cllr Begley – Rob doesn’t suffer fools lightly.

Keith’s clearly lost the plot about what the role of Mayor or Chairman of a council is ! But a letters page well worth reading.

Best edition to date and I understand the print order is now over 8,000.
