Delays Expected As Lydgate Wall Work Begins

The Oldham Road at Lydgate is going to be down to one lane for the next 18 weeks.

Work to repair the retaining walls on the Oldham Road at Lydgate are due to start this morning. For the next 18 weeks, the road will be reduced to just one lane of traffic, controlled by temporary traffic lights. So, if you use the Oldham Road especially during rush hour, allow extra time for your journey.

Oldham Council describes the work as “vital for the safety of the road.” The repairs involve the rebuilding of the existing dry stone wall which supports the nearby field. As part of the work a length of hedge and some trees will have to be removed, but new ones will be planted.

Cllr John McCann, who represents Saddleworth South and holds the Environment and Regeneration portfolio in the Liberal Democrat/Conservative administration, said: “Every effort shall be made to keep disruption to a minimum and we will try to carry out the works as quickly and as practically as possible. The work will also prevent future problems which could cause further disruption and delays for motorists.”

The work is one of 34 similar schemes being carried out across the borough over the next two years. The government has given Oldham Council £20m for all the repairs, with the council spending a further £2.2m.

Meanwhile, a series of traffic measures to improve safety on Milnrow Road in Shaw was revealed by the council last week. There’s more information on the council website here, and from the Chronicle here.
