Diggle gulley issue gets a response from Oldham Council

Saddleworth News recently met with Councillor Garth Harkness near to Brun Clough Reservoir in Diggle to investigate one of the major causes of flooding along the A62 Huddersfield Road.

During torrential rain the water from Marsden Moor flows down onto the Huddersfield Road near to the Diggle and Marsden border. This has led to surface water on the road forming a small river running down towards Delph and Dobcross.

Although there is a drainage gulley running alongside the road to help prevent this, over the years it has been badly maintained, the recent bad weather has caused it to collapse filling up with debris, and rendering it useless.

Councillor Harkness, who met with Saddleworth News editor Stuart Littleford a few weeks ago saw the problem for himself, and agreed to take the matter up with Oldham Council.

He has now had a response from Oldham Council’s Highways Section.

Peter Kiely, Network Manager, Highways said: “I can advise that my colleague Mr MacRae is investigating the possibility of a damaged watercourse where the road has partially collapsed and my colleague Mr Cavanagh is to take measures to reduce the amount of erosion from the watershed area at the top of the track as part of maintenance to the Pennine Way.”

We will keep readers informed of how any repair and maintenance works are progressing.
