Ken and Anne Wright from Dobcross have said they’re “dead chuffed” to have been made MBEs for services to the local community.

They were recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours, which were announced over the weekend.

The couple, who supplied a brief biography of themselves to Saddleworth News, have been involved in all manner of activities in our area over the past few decades.

Ken, who has lived in the village since 1965, has been a key member of the Saddleworth Players ever since, serving in a variety of roles including chairman, licensee and now stage director.

He has also been involved in several other voluntary roles, including extensively with the Huddersfield Narrow Canal, as a reader and editor with talking newspapers for the blind, a meals on wheels helper, and with Whit Friday in Dobcross.

Ken spent four decades of his working life in local government before retiring in 1990.

Anne, who married Ken in 1974, has been involved with the Saddleworth Players since a year earlier. She is also an active member of the Saddleworth Musical Society.

In addition to her involvement with her husband with the Huddersfield Narrow Canal, meals on wheels services and talking newspapers, she also spent two decades as treasurer of Saddleworth Cancer Research.
