Dobcross Features On Sky News

Dobcross was on Sky News yesterday. The village had a short but starring role in a report on the initiative by Greater Manchester Police to record every call it received over a 24-hour period on Twitter.

The force was trying to show how much of its time is spent responding to a variety of non-emergencies, as well as more serious crimes. Chief Constable Peter Fahy described two thirds of the incidents his officers have to deal with as “social work.”

Sky reporter Michelle May did some filming with officers in Oldham, and followed them as they responded to Call 1256 of the day, a report of a car rolling down Woods Lane in Dobcross. The vehicle had gently bumped another parked car and come to rest at an angle sticking slightly out into the road. Michelle’s voice over dryly noted that it was “hardly a major emergency.”

Amusingly, the longer version of the report which was broadcast on TV showed the officers looking at a map to help them find their way to the village, although sadly this wasn’t included in the shorter edit posted on the Sky News website. That shorter version of the report can be viewed here.

As for other incidents during the day, at one point during the afternoon officers were informed of a horse running loose in Uppermill. However, that was far from the oddest call out in our division. Someone rang up after seeing four men smoking in a car in Oldham, while officers also received a call following a row between children over a football.
