A proud music tutor has been in touch with Saddleworth News to share the success of three of his pupils, all members of Dobcross Youth Band.

Philip Dust has revealed that 15-year-old Seth Livingstone and Josef Doughty, who’s 16, will begin studying at the Royal Northern College of Music Junior School this month. Seth hails from Dobcross itself while Josef is from Uppermill, and both play the euphonium.

They’re following a trail set by another Dobcross Youth Band member, flugelhorn player Rebecca Maxwell, who joined the Junior RNCM this time last year.

The Junior RNCM provides specialist training to musically gifted youngsters aged from eight to 18. They go along to the college site in Manchester on Saturdays outside normal school hours, with some travelling from as far away as Wales and Nottinghamshire.

Philip said: “Acceptance into the school is by audition only and for three members of our local band to have achieved such a standard at the same time is quite exceptional.”

Philip, himself a former Dobcross Youth Band player, is now a full-time professional player, conductor and teacher. Because of his pupils’ success, he’s now got a limited number of places available for aspiring brass students, on any brass instrument from grade 1-8. For more details and a free assessment, he can be reached on 07714769702.
