Easter Activities Planned At Standedge

Crew members get ready to leg a boat through the tunnel earlier this month.

There’s another busy weekend of activities ahead in and around the Standedge Tunnel.

Following the celebrations earlier this month to mark the 200th anniversary of the tunnel, the Horseboating Society will once again be legging a boat between Diggle and Marsden in the traditional style.

The legging takes place tomorrow, which is also St George’s Day. The boat is scheduled to emerge at 3:30pm, and organisers say it’ll be recreating St George’s mythical fight against the dragon!

Also this weekend, there’s an opportunity for families to visit the new children’s playground at the Marsden end of the tunnel, along with the nearby wildlife and sensory garden which has been created by volunteers over recent weeks.

In a statement, James Dean, the Standedge Visitor Services Manager, said: “The playground is perfect for local children to come and enjoy during the Easter holidays. The new space is fun, interactive and is a great addition to the tunnel, visitor centre and café offer. For the kids, we’ve also got some fun Easter trails around the site where they can win some chocolatey prizes!”

More information about events at Standedge can be found at the Visitor Centre website here. They’re also on Twitter here.
