An exhibition of paintings by local artist Tricia Kenworthy will be held at the Millgate Arts Centre in Delph.

The exhibiton of paintings called ‘Memories of Africa’ will start on September 21st and coincides with the first play of Saddleworth Players new season.

Speaking to Saddleworth News Tricia said: “In 2001 I suddenly felt wanderlust and wanted to go far a-field, using my experience as a teacher and my knowledge of psychology and anthropology. I knew that volunteering in Africa would fulfil my need to explore, to help where I could and to understand relationships in cultures other than my own.

“In Kenya in 2007 and Malawi in 2008, I was also involved in conservation and environmental projects. These included protecting and rescuing the Colobus monkeys, caring for orphaned vervets and baboons and vaccinating dogs and cats against rabies.

“While teaching in Sudan, and townships around Cape Town, as well as Zanzibar and Ghana, my students, teachers and people I met told me of their hopes and aspirations.

“Their positive attitude to life and their community spirit enable them to overcome their harsh environments and economic deprivation. They showed me the true resilience and determination of humankind.”

Tricia says her art reveals how these conditions have impacted on people’s lives and how the cross-cultural experiences have influenced her perspective on life.

She added: “I hold all these memories in my paintings.”
