Extraordinary pupils and women of Mossley
After receiving a Heritage Lottery grant earlier this year, Mossley Civic Society volunteers have been working hard with community artists Green Monster Arts and local primary schools to produce five local history trails throughout Mossley.
On Saturday July 7th, all the 36 information boards were in place throughout Mossley, the trails were launched and the beautifully designed leaflets were published and distributed. Mossley dignitaries attended the Launch Day along with over 100 visitors who enjoyed seeing pupils’ stories and drawings and hearing how the project had evolved.
Shirley Howard (Treasurer of Mossley Civic Society) said “The art work by Ann Gilligan of Green Monster Arts is superb, the leaflets are both informative and stunning and we have already received very positive comments about the trail boards which can be seen all around Mossley.”
Project Manager, Rachel Summerscales added “We are now ready to move onto the next stage of the project which involves creating a website and new branding for the Centre. We are aiming to have this ready for Heritage Open Days so that we can celebrate our new technology along with Mossley’s heritage.” Heritage Open Days has the theme of Extraordinary Women this year and Dyllis Wolinski (Secretary of Mossley Civic Society) explained “Obviously there are lots of extraordinary women in Mossley both throughout history and in modern times so we have been really spoilt for choice.” The Civic Society has researched information and created a display about 15 notable women from Mossley’s history and then matched them with modern day equivalents. These modern counterparts (including Mossley’s Mayor, Irene Raddings) have been invited to attend on Saturday 8th where there will also be a demonstration from a women’s clogging group.
