The fire is believed to have started in the kitchen of the property at around 8.15pm and quickly spread to the roof area.

GMFRS firefighters wearing breathing apparatus have entered the property and are currently tackling the blaze in the roof section. A specialist command unit and six fire appliances are at the scene along with the ambulance service.

Next door neighbour, Greg Burgess, told Saddleworth News: “We were sat in our front room and began to smell smoke, we thought we had left something on in our kitchen and when we went in we found it was full of smoke but realised it was coming from next door.

“My wife immediately called the fire brigade as I ran outside to check on our neighbour.

“Once outside I saw she was already out of the house and the neighbour on the other side had also run around to help, it wasn’t long before we could hear the fire engine sirens – we are just glad everyone is safe tonight.”

A spokesperson for GMFRS told Saddleworth News tonight: “We were called to a house fire in Uppermill at around 8.15pm that started in the kitchen of the property and involved the first floor bedroom and roof area. An elderly female was treated at the scene by the ambulance service for the affects of smoke inhalation.”

It is expected that firefighters will remain at the property for some time tonight as they carry out damping down operations.
