Former Saddleworth Councillor Dies

A former Saddleworth councillor has died. Brian Mather, who represented the old Saddleworth East ward for 20 years between 1984 and 2004, passed away on Tuesday.

Mr Mather was 74 and had been suffering from stomach cancer. He spent most of his political career as a Liberal Democrat, apart from his final year of his office when he served as an Independent. He was Mayor of Oldham in 1993/94.

The funeral will take place at Uppermill Methodist Church a week tomorrow. Instead of flowers, the family has asked for donations to be made to Dr Kershaw’s Hospice, where Mr Mather died.

There’s more information from the Oldham Chronicle here, and the council here.
